I asked him something that had been weighing on me for a long time. “If I want my children to grow up within certain standards,” I said, “how do I make sure those standards actually stay with them?”

He didn’t hesitate. “You start much earlier than you think,” he said. “You start before the child is even born.”

I looked at him, slightly confused.

“The standards you want your children to live by,” he continued, “you must begin cultivating them inside yourself first.”

That landed quietly—but firmly.

He explained that children do not first encounter values through instruction. They encounter them through exposure. Through watching. Not the instruction. The culture of the environment. Children are extraordinarily sensitive to contradiction. When values are spoken but not lived, they quietly conclude that values are decorative—not real.

I realized how often we try to teach values that we haven’t fully inhabited ourselves. We lecture about patience while being impatient. We demand honesty while practicing convenience. We speak about respect while modeling contempt. He said it plainly. “Children don’t resist values,” he said. “They resist inconsistency.”

As the conversation went on, something else became clear. But labels also shut down curiosity. When I say, “He lied,” the case feels closed. When I say, “He could not tell me the truth,” a question opens. Why not? He pointed out that this small shift—from accusation to description—does something subtle but powerful. It moves the mind from judgment to inquiry, from moral superiority to shared responsibility.

Because the moment I say, “He could not tell me the truth,” another question follows naturally: What made truth difficult here? Was there fear? Was there pressure? Was there a lack of trust? Was there something about me, or the situation, that made honesty feel unsafe?

And at that moment, something uncomfortable—but necessary—happens. I enter the picture.

“This doesn’t mean you justify the lie,” he clarified. “It means you stop pretending the lie exists in isolation.” Very few behaviors do.

A child hides a mistake not because lying is natural, but because punishment feels certain. An employee distorts facts not because dishonesty is enjoyable, but because consequences feel unbearable. A spouse withholds the truth not because deception is attractive, but because honesty feels dangerous.

None of this makes lying right. But it does make it understandable. And understanding is where solutions begin.

Then he said something that unsettled me. “When someone lies to you,” he said, “you are not always the cause—but you are often part of the context.” Sometimes my anger is unpredictable. Sometimes my disappointment feels crushing. Sometimes my reactions silently teach people that truth is costly.

That doesn’t make me guilty. But it does make me relevant. He then applied the same idea to another label I use easily: lazy. He asked me to think of someone I often describe that way.

“He never finishes his work on time,” I said. “He’s just lazy.”

He shook his head. “Reframe it.” Instead of saying, “He is lazy,” he suggested I say, “He is not generating enough motivation to complete his work.”

I laughed. “That sounds complicated.”

“It sounds accurate,” he replied. He explained that when I call someone lazy, the conversation ends. Lazy people don’t invite solutions; they invite blame. But when I say, “This person lacks motivation,” new questions emerge. Does he understand the task? Does the work feel meaningless to him? Is he overwhelmed? Is he afraid of failure? Is there no ownership or reward?

Now the problem is no longer the person. The problem is the system, the meaning, the motivation. And problems like that can actually be worked on.

He asked me to look inward. “For a long time,” he said, “many people think they have an anger problem.”

As he spoke, I recognized myself. I had raised my voice. I had snapped. I had labeled myself quickly: “I’m just an angry person.”

“But when you reframe it,” he said, “something else often appears.” I wasn’t angry. I was hurt—and unheard. I was frustrated—and unacknowledged. Anger was simply the language that came out when I didn’t know how to express the rest.

“When the emotion finally gets the right name,” he said, “the behavior often begins to change on its own.”

He then named the hidden cost of labels. “Labels make you feel certain,” he said. “But they make you ineffective.” Labels protect the ego. Understanding requires humility. Because understanding forces me to ask, again and again: What is my role in this dynamic?

Not in a self-blaming way. In a responsible way. He looked at me and said, “The moment you reframe the situation, you stop being a judge and start becoming a participant in the solution.” That doesn’t mean excusing wrong actions. It means abandoning the illusion that I am not part of the system in which those actions occur. And that quiet internal shift changes everything. My anger softens. My language changes. My responses become wiser.

I sat silently for a while. “So you’re saying,” I finally said, “that when I change the way I describe the problem, the problem itself changes?”

He nodded. “Or at least, it finally becomes solvable.”

Because once the label is removed, the human being reappears. And when the human being reappears, so does the possibility of growth—for him, and for me.

I said it almost casually, “I think the problem is that people don’t want to change.”

That stung. “So what should one do instead?” I asked.

“When a negative emotion appears,” he said, “treat it like a question.”

“Yes. Ask: What just got activated inside me? Was it an expectation? A fear? A familiar wound? A belief about how people should behave?”

“No,” he replied. “It means responding from awareness, not injury. Accountability can coexist with understanding.”

“What does a learner aim for then?” I asked.

“To stay awake,” he said. “To remain curious about the self. To notice patterns instead of defending identities.”

It was astonishing how much calmer my mind became when I stopped trying to predict the future and started taking care of the present.

He used to remind me again and again, “What is not in your hands, put it in God’s hands. What is in your hands, don’t neglect it.” This simple division gave me immense clarity. Some things belong to my domain: my actions, my responses, my focus, my discipline. And some things belong to God’s domain: outcomes, timing, ultimate healing, life, and death. Confusing these two domains is one of the greatest sources of human suffering.

When I try to control what belongs to God, I become anxious. When I neglect what belongs to me, I become irresponsible. Balance lies in honoring both.

Over time, I began to treat my anxious thoughts like notifications on a phone. Some are important. Some are spam. Not every notification deserves immediate attention. And something beautiful happened when I started practicing this: I stopped being ashamed of my anxiety. I no longer told myself, “I shouldn’t feel this way.” Instead, I told myself, “It’s okay to feel this way—but I don’t have to obey this feeling.” That shift changed everything.

He once encouraged me to write down the moments when I successfully stopped an unhelpful thought and how I did it. At first, it felt strange—almost unnecessary. But then I realized how powerful it was to make the invisible visible. I could now see patterns: Which thoughts disturb me most, which times of day I am most vulnerable, and which inner dialogues help me recover faster. And when I began sharing these small victories with others, something surprising happened: they started sharing theirs too. We were no longer just surviving our thoughts—we were learning how to work with them.

There is a quiet strength in learning how to say to oneself, “This is painful. But pain will not become my master.”

Life will bring disturbing information again and again. That is not something we can escape. But we can decide whether every disturbing piece of information will become a permanent resident in our mind—or just a passing visitor. Anxiety is human. Obsession is optional. And between the two lies a powerful, dignified choice: to live with awareness, restraint, and trust. Not by denying fear. But by refusing to let fear decide how I live.

But when you slow the moment down, something else appears. “They worked hard,” he said. “They expected acknowledgment. It didn’t come.” That unacknowledged effort turned into disappointment. Disappointment turned into frustration. Frustration, without recognition, turned into anger. “And now,” he said, “everyone responds to the apparent anger, while the hurt remains untouched.”

I asked why we don’t just say, “I’m hurt.”

He smiled when I complained. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” I said. “I keep postponing those things, which I know matter. And then suddenly—panic. Deadline. Pressure. I do it anyway, but at the last moment.”

He gave a simple example: “You get an assignment,” he said. “You don’t start when you receive it. You start when you have no option left.”

I nodded. That was uncomfortably accurate.

“And when you finally do it,” he continued, “you work hard. You focus. You stretch yourself.”

“So I can complete it,” I said.

“Yes,” he replied. “But only when urgency puts a gun to your head.” He leaned back and said, “Most people think they have a time-management problem. They don’t.”

“What do they have then?” I asked.

He didn’t promise ease. “Acting on importance without urgency feels unnatural at first,” he said. There is no adrenaline. No external push. No fear. Just a quiet decision: This matters—even if nothing bad happens today. “That,” he said, “is harder than panic-driven effort. But that’s where freedom begins.”

He ended with a question I still carry: “Are you living by what demands you—or by what deserves you?” Urgency will always exist. Deadlines will never disappear. But a life driven only by urgency slowly loses direction. The moment you begin to act on what is important before it becomes urgent, something shifts. You stop being chased by life. I thought about it for a moment and gave the kind of answer people usually give. “Because they guide us?”

He nodded. “Yes. But more importantly, because rules collapse under pressure.” He explained that in ordinary life, being truthful isn’t very difficult. Most of the time, there is no incentive to lie. No visible gain. No urgent loss to avoid. “In those moments,” he said, “character doesn’t feel heavy.”

The test appears elsewhere. “The real difficulty,” he said, “is not when truth is easy.” It’s when a lie works. When speaking against the facts can save you from embarrassment. When bending the truth protects you from loss. When staying silent or distorting reality seems to offer safety. “These are the moments,” he said, “where people discover what they’re actually living for.”

He was blunt. “If your morality is built only on rules,” he said, “it will not survive stress.” Rules are external. Pressure is internal. And when the two collide, pressure usually wins.

He explained that without a larger motive—something that matters more than comfort, reputation, or immediate gain—people start negotiating with themselves. Just this once. No one will know. It’s not that serious.

That’s not because people are evil. It’s because they are unanchored. He gave an ordinary scenario as an example: A person makes a small mistake at work. Nothing illegal. Nothing dramatic. But admitting it could lead to embarrassment or a financial setback. They have two options:

He told me about a student who once refused to cheat on an exam—even though everyone else was doing it and the invigilator was absent. When asked why, the student didn’t say, “Because cheating is wrong.” He said, “Because I don’t want to become someone who cheats when it’s convenient.”

“That,” he said, “is motive.” Not fear of punishment. Not love of praise. But loyalty to an inner standard.

He smiled and said something quietly unsettling. “You don’t discover your motives when you talk about them. You discover them when something is at stake.” When telling the truth costs you. When honesty isolates you. When integrity delays success. That is where motives either reveal themselves—or disappear.

Without strong motives, life becomes reactive. You respond to threats rather than to values. You chase relief instead of meaning. You optimize for survival instead of character. “Short-term safety,” he said, “is the greatest enemy of long-term integrity.”

He ended with a line that stayed with me. “If the only reason you’re honest is that it’s easy—you’re not honest yet.” Honesty begins when it becomes costly. Integrity begins when compromise is attractive. Character begins when motive outweighs convenience. And that is why motive matters more than rules. Because when pressure rises, rules ask, “What should I do?” Motives answer, “Who am I unwilling to stop being?”

And that answer—more than any rule—is what keeps a person on the right path when the facts are negotiable, and the gains are tempting.

He said it quietly, almost as if stating a fact no one likes to hear. “The choice never disappears.”

I looked up. “Even after everything that’s happened to a person?”

“Especially then,” he replied. He explained that once a human being reaches the age of moral awareness—when they can distinguish right from wrong—they are never stripped of choice. The ability to use that choice may be weak. The skill to act on it may be underdeveloped. But the choice itself remains. “And that,” he said, “is precisely why life becomes a test.”

I pushed back. “But what about childhood? Trauma? Environment? Surely those things determine a lot.”

“They explain a lot,” he agreed. “They don’t decide everything.” He explained the difference carefully. Childhood experiences, parenting styles, social pressure, and environment all shape tendencies. They tilt the field. They make certain responses more likely. “But likelihood is not destiny,” he said.  A child raised in chaos may find calm difficult. A child raised in neglect may struggle with trust. A child raised in fear may default to a defensive stance. “These are real disadvantages,” he said. “But they are not the erasure of choice.”

He warned me about a subtle but dangerous shift that happens in adult life. “At some point,” he said, “explanation quietly turns into excuse.” We begin by saying, that is why I am like this. Then we slide into, “that is why I cannot be otherwise.

“That second sentence,” he said, “kills responsibility.” He offered a thought experiment, “Imagine cause and effect were absolute,” he said. “So strong that no choice remained. If choice truly vanished, then punishment would be oppression, and reward would be favoritism. The entire moral structure would collapse. “So choice,” he said, “is not a burden. It’s an honor.”

I thought about how often people say, That is just how I am.

He corrected me gently. “No. That is how you are right now.” He explained that many people don’t lack choice—they lack patience with growth. “They expect immediate transformation,” he said. “When it doesn’t happen, they declare it impossible.” But moral development doesn’t work like a switch. It works like training a muscle that has been unused. “You don’t blame the muscle,” he said. “You train it.”

He shared an example from his own life. “There was a habit I hated in myself,” he said. “I understood it. I traced it back to my past. I could explain it perfectly.”

“So why didn’t you stop?” I asked.

“Because understanding feels like action,” he replied. “But it’s not.” For a long time, explanations gave him relief without change. Only when he accepted that the responsibility was still his did anything begin to shift. “Slowly,” he said. “Painfully. But honestly.”

Then he turned the lens outward.

“There is a grave problem,” he said, “when people stop looking at themselves.” When everything wrong is always someone else’s fault. When every failure is blamed on circumstances. When every flaw is traced outward, never inward. “This mindset,” he said, “feels comforting. But it destroys growth.” Because growth requires ownership. And ownership requires accepting that, even with all constraints, something is still in your hands.

He wasn’t dismissing hardship. He wasn’t minimizing trauma. He was saying something harder. “Your past may explain the slope,” he said. “But you still choose how you climb.” And climbing is always harder than sliding.

As we ended, he said something that felt both heavy and liberating. “Don’t obsess over what shaped you,” he said. “Focus on what is shaping you now.” Every moment of awareness is a renewed test. Every realization is a new opening. Every pause before reaction is proof that choice is still alive. And perhaps that is the quiet truth most people avoid: You may not be responsible for what happened to you. But once you see yourself clearly, you become responsible for what you do next.

That responsibility is not cruelty. It is dignity.
